Cost Accountant III

PURPOSE:

 

This position is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and proper accountability of cost accounting records and for providing financial support to the organization.

 

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor degree in Accounting or Finance required, and CPA license preferred.   Accounting experience must be 3-5 years, preferably in a manufacturing environment.  General accounting knowledge a must, at least 2 years cost accounting experience required.  Some experience with Six Sigma/ Lean Processes preferred.  Proficient in personal computer skills (Excel and Word), and experience in a MRP environment, such as SAP.  Strong written and oral communication skills.  Ability to work effectively with others.  Strong analytical skills, problem solving skills.  Fast and flexible; multi tasked, organized, works well under pressure.

 

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

 

Department/Local Operating Instructions, Safety Program Training, Systems Training.

Operations; manufacturing/inventory planning/purchasing personnel.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY:

Indicate budget/revenue responsibility.

None.

Explain the degree of supervision/guidance, procedures/ processes used,  judgment,  creativity, planning & resourcefulness needed to do the job. 

Works under minimum supervision.  Relies on experience and judgment to accomplish assigned tasks.  A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.  May direct the work of lower level employees.  Familiar with a variety of field concepts, practices, and procedures.

How are errors detected and what is possible impact of those errors?

Most of work is not subject to direct check or verification.  Errors are detected through reconciliations and margin analysis, impact may be loss of revenue recognition and/or margin degradation, as well as over/under statement of balance sheet reserves/inventory.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Office environment, some time will be spent in factory/warehouse performing inventories or meeting with manufacturing personnel70% - 80% of time spent on computer.  20% - 30% of time spent problem solving/communicating with personnel.  Some travel required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Frequent sitting, walking through plant, and operating computer.

Duties and Responsibilities

Daily verify and review accuracy of inventory transactions and maintain current cost standards.

E

Prepare and maintain monthly reconciliations, which are due to management by the 15th of each month.

E

Assist with month end closing – review variances, cost center reviews, balance sheet review, etc.

E

Meet deadlines as required.

E

Support other accounting areas and works on special projects as requested by supervisor.

E

Establishes, monitors, and analyze accurate standard costs.

E

Assist in field location physical inventories.

E

Participate in the on-going review of internal controls and assist in annual SOX testing.

E

Analyze manufacturing variances on a monthly basis for management.

E

Assist in the training and development of personnel in the understanding of standard costing and production variances.

E

Maintain compliance with financial standards.

E

Lead process improvement initiatives within the department and organization.

E

Present cost accounting financial information to management.

E

Assist with year end activities; update ABC codes, LIFO review, WIP inventory, field inventories, annual cost roll up, obsolescence review.
